Poker – a journey through continents and cultures

We have all seen it in a movie – around a table in a saloon sits some cowboys and plays poker, and suddenly one of them draws his revolver followed by loud shouts about cheating. But the history of poker is so much more than this, it’s a fascinating travel through several continents and cultures before it shows up in a saloon in the Wild West.

Dead Mans Hand

Dead Mans Hand.
It exists several opinions about what the last card was.

The history of poker is widely debated, and there are several theories about where the origin comes from and how the game has developed. The many myths about origin and name and fascinating stories about victories and losses may also have been important to the popularity poker has today. A poker player is a part of history even if the opponent is just a nickname on a computer screen, a history that includes the destiny to James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok in 1876. The description Dead Mans Hand points to the card combination he had in his hand when he left this world.

But let’s not dwell to long with “Wild Bill”. We continues our historical journey backwards in time where we crosses the track of the discovery of the art of distillation, a discovery which must take much of the glory for today’s existence of Poker Cognac. We have moved to Persia and the Persian game Âs Nas, who many believes is one of the first forerunners to poker. Âs Nas was played with 25 cards and required five players, and the hand ranking were close to what you find in poker. How Âs Nas influenced the evolution of poker further are debated, but it’s pretty sure that poker also have its oldest roots from Persia just as cognac has.

Steamers on the MississippiAs you know cognac is made in Cognac in France, and this is where we now have moved in this article. Poque was a game played in France in the 17th and 18th century. The origin of poque is also debated, but the game has contributed to the evolution of poker and was the national card game in France in that century. The French colonials then imported Poque to Canada, and later the game travelled with the French-Canadian settlers to New Orleans. From New Orleans the game spread with the steamboats up Mississippi, and thereafter throughout the entire country. When and where the game changed name to poker the history says little or nothing about, but probably this happened on the riverboats on Mississippi. Poker Cards and Chips on the tableWhen the joker was introduced in poker as a wild card around 1875, the European influence on poker ended, and further development has mainly been American.

Poker is today the most popular card game in the whole world, and there are several variations like Omaha, Stud Poker Games, Razz, Manila and Draw Poker, but the most popular variant is No Limit Texas Hold’em.
